"Historic Fort Massachusetts was built by the Union Army and Navy during
the War between the states. It is fourteen miles directly south of Biloxi. Here on Ship Island, the headquarters for the West Gulf Blockading Squadron for the U.S. Navy was maintained during the War."

"Old Fort Massachusetts"
"Construction started in 1858, on the western tip of
Ship Island, to protect the entance to New Orleans through Rigolets Pass to Lake Pontchartrain. Designed
for 48 cannons. Not completed due to the war between the States, during which the fort was occupoied
alternately by Federals and Confederates. Later a prison forsome 4000 Confederate soldiers. Abandoned in 1875."

"...located on Ship Island, 12 miles off the Coast of Mississippi. Construction was started in 1858, but never completed. Abandoned in 1875. Daily excursion trips from Gulfport and Biloxi."
